Duckocalypse
Final MR Space Video Prototype
Project Overview
In our mixed reality project, "Duckocalypse," the user is the camera and their journey kicks off with a menu scene. When the game starts, there is a peaceful world filled with friendly rubber ducks. The aim is to gather as many ducks as possible by walking close to them. As the player accumulates more ducks, the world's brightness dims. Once they've collected a certain number of ducks there is a terrifying jumpscare. The innocent ducks suddenly turn menacing and relentlessly pursue them. As the user dashes away from the transformed ducks, the screen starts showing red spots, representing damage from the relentless chase. If the user is hit too many times, it's game over, accompanied by a brief message about sustainability and pollution.
Genre
We chose the horror genre for our project because we want to utilise the shock aspect to educate people about SDG12 (responsible consumption and production). Rubber ducks appear to be amusing at first glance, however, they are constructed of non-recyclable plastic and are frequently discarded after one usage. We wanted to emphasise the environmental impact of these rubber ducks. The project begins peacefully, with users encouraged to gather rubber ducks. However, as more ducks are collected, they become evil and give the user a jumpscare, symbolising the environmental problems caused by overconsumption and unethical production. We hope that by immersing consumers in this mixed reality terror experience, they will confront the repercussions of their decisions. Duckocalypse aims to inspire thought and promote awareness about the importance of responsible consumption in a pleasant and informative way.
